La Traviata Acts I and III
Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
The Lady of the Camellias.
The large audience which assembled in the Metropolitan Opera House last night had the pleasure of hearing the whole of one opera and parts of another. The programme consisted of the first and fourth acts of Verdi's 'La Traviata," and Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana." The principal singers engaged in the first were Mme. Nordica., Signor de Lucia, M. Dufriche, and Mlle. Bauermeister. There were others, but the first three had the burden of the work to bear. The old opera has not been heard frequently of late but it was noticed that Marguerite Gautier, disguised as Violetta Valery, was able to sing in the last stages of consumption quite as well as ever. Indeed, it is only justice to Mme. Nordica to say that she sang unusually well last night. The soprano fairly earned the hearty applause which she received. Signor de Lucia sang the music of Alfredo in his customary impassioned manner.
It is impossible to add anything to the comment already made on this season's performance of "Cavalleria Rusticana." The singers last night were Mme. Calvé as Santuzza, Mlle. Bauermeister as Lucia. Mlle. Guercia as Lola, Signor Vignas as Turlddu, and Signor Ancona as Alfio. The performance was full of spirit, and was warmly applauded. The leading artists were called out several times at the end of the opera.
