Review by W.J. Henderson:
It is not often that an artist receives such substantial evidence of kindly remembrance and popular regard as Signor Italo Campanini received at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. M. Jean de Reszke was ill and unable to appear, and as there is a good deal of work ahead of the other tenors next week, Signor Campanini at 4 o'clock in the afternoon was asked to sing the title role of Gounod's 'Faust' last evening. It was very short notice; indeed, so short that the popular tenor must have felt very sure of his memory to accept it. There was an immense audience present, and Signor Campanini was received with every mark of favor. The applause after his 'Salve Dimora' was long and enthusiastic.... Another old acquaintance who took the place of a sick member of the company was Mme. Lablache. She appeared as Marta in place of Mlle. Bauermeister, who has been suffering from a severe cold.
