Review 1:

Review of W.J. Henderson:

L'Amico Fritz is not a strong work. It is pretty and idyllic, but it lacks the throbbing passion that makes "Cavalleria Rusticana" so successful. The result is that Mme. Calvé, though she gave a charming performance of Suzel, could not display her strongest qualitites. She sang the music extremely well, and sang one or two high notes which must have surprised her admirers. Signor de Lucia was better as Fritz than he has been in any other part except Canio in "Pagliacci." To be sure, the objections to his peculiar voice were not removed by last night's performance, but dramatic display was once again advantageously displayed.
