GRAND OPERA IN BROOKLYN.

The Metropolitan Opera House Company In Gounod's Masterpiece.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music held a large and well-pleased audience last night when some of the principal artists of Messrs. Abbey & Grau's opera company appeared in Gounod's "Faust." More than ordinary interest was aroused by the performance from the fact that M. Plançon made his first appearance in this country in the part of Mephistopheles. It was to be expected that an artist who has shown himself to be so admirable in other rôles and who has been thoroughly trained in the traditions of the French stage would act and sing the tempter well.

In appearance M Piançon was superb, and his authoritative style made him dominate the stage while he was on it. It is hardly necessary to say that he sang the music with that beautiful smoothness and finish for which he is already noted. His acting was always graceful and full of meaning, his facial expression being particularly good in its variety and eloquence. He accentuated the fact that Mephistopheles was masquerading in the guise of the gentleman of rank, and was at all times the gallant cavalier.

The other members of the cast were Mme. Eames as Marguerite, Mme. Scalchi as Siebel, Mlle. Bauermeister as Martha, Signor de Lucia as Faust, Signor Martapoura as Valentine, and Signor de Vaschetti as Wagner. Mme. Eames was troubled with a little hoarseness, which made itself evident occasionally in her tower notes. But her skill was sufficient to overcome the difficulty, and she sang the music charmingly. The performance in general was smooth and effective, and the audience testified to its pleasure by frequent and hearty applause.
