Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
Metropolitan Opera House.
The policy of Messrs. Abbey & Grau appears now to be definitely in the direction of giving good general casts rather than trusting to the attractive powers of one or two fine artists. This policy shows a wise readiness to comply with a manifest public demand. The resources of the admirable company are such that the execution of the plan is by no means difficult. At the matinée yesterday Gounod's "Romeo et Julette" was performed in a most delightful manner. M. Jean de Reszke and Mme. Emma Eames repeated their artistic impersonations of the hero and heroine. M. Edouard de Reszke was again the Friar, and M. Plançon replaced M. Dufriche as Capulet. It is unnecessary to say that so excellent an artist as M. Plançon had an easy task in performing this part and that he added greatly to the strength of the cast.
