Review 1:

Review of W. J. Henderson in The New York Times

The performance was one of the best of the current season. It had two conspicuous features of more than common excellence. These were M. Jean de Reszke's John of Leyden and Mme. Lehmann's Bertha. M. de Reszke's calibre as an artist was never more fully shown. His singing was powerful in its vocal aspects and equally so in its dramatic fervor. There is nothing new to be said about Mme. Lehmann's Bertha, which is well known to this public. Last night she was in excellent voice, and spared no effort to make her part a worthy companion to the tenor's John. M. Edouard de Reszke's sonorous voice added to the effectiveness of the music of the Anabaptists, of whom the other two were Signori Monti and Viviani. The opera was well put on the stage, and the ballet disported itself in the snow in an agreeable manner.
