Review 1:

Review of Henry Krehbiel in the New York Tribune

The beautiful voice of our fair countrywoman (Eames), her obviously excellent musical knowledge, and praiseworthy though incomplete training, stood her in good stead throughout the evening. Wherein her performance fell short was in warmth and variety of expression-the qualities in which the singing of Mr. Jean de Reszke was most admirable. Mr. de Reszke's voice is much less remarkable than his heart and art. Last night it seemed even more veiled and less resonant than last week, but it floats so buoyantly on the flood of his dramatic feeling that one is seldom inclined to cavil at it. The Mefistofélès was Signor Serbolini, who lacks the voice-quality and depth required for the part, and the Valentin was Monsieur Martapoura, who made the public remember his predecessors with regret
