YESTERDAY'S MUSIC.
The production of Bellini's most dramatic work, "Norma," at the Metropolitan Opera House yesterday afternoon was attended by an audience of tolerable size. The performance had some conspicuous merits which were enjoyed and applauded by the auditors. The reappearance of Lilli Lehmann in the title rôle was in itself a noteworthy incident. The eminent soprano has sung the part here before, and those who were in the habit of attending the German opera performances need not be told that her interpretation is notable for the forcefulness of its dramatic expression. Frau Lehmann - perhaps, in the circumstances, we should say Signora - was vigorous and sincere in her work yesterday, but it must be admitted that she is not heard at her best in music of the ornamental kind.
The other principal members of the cast were Mr. Kalisch as Pollione. Mme. Pettigiani as Adalgisa, and Signor Serbolini, as Oroviso. All three of them acquitted themselves with credit. The chorus was heard to better advantage yesterday than it has been heretofore, and Signor Vianesi conducted with skill.
