METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.

The performance of "Lohengrin" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was attended by a very large and enthusiastic audience. It was a performance which had so many merits that it did not deserve to be spoiled, at it was, by certain lamentable defects. Can anyone explain why it is that whenever Herr Perotti meets with any small measure of success in a Wagner rôle he promptly proceeds to transform himself into Signor Perotti, and to Italianize the part to the best of his ability The public recently witnessed his painful attempt to change the rugged hero of the Volsungs, Siegmund, into an Italian opera gentleman, and last night he did his best to makeover the solemn and high-minded Knight of the Grail into a mincing medieval lover, piping his sentimental roundelays at Elsa. A sentimental Lohengrin, a smiling, simpering Lohengrin - think of it!

And how in the world could he be sentimental over that Elsa! She had a tremolo of grotesque proportions, and she sang out of tune three fourths of the time. Last evening's performance ought to decide the fate of Fräulein Wiesner once and for all. Perhaps it may have occurred to many that it was a pity that Frau Seidl-Kraus should be sitting still doing nothing at such a time. The other members of the cast were the same as heretofore. Fräulein Huhn's earnestness atoned in a large degree for her vocal shortcomings. Herr Reichmann's Telramund was, of course, excellent, and so was Herr Beck's Herald. Herr Behrens deserves praise for his good singing as the King. The chorus was worthy of praise, and the orchestra did its work well. Walter Damrosch conducted with skill.
