Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
The second performance of "The Queen of Sheba" was given at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening before a large and apparently well pleased audience. There is little to add to what was said after the first presentation of the work this season. Taken all around, the cast is about the best that Goldmark's opera has ever received here. While it is not a great opera, it is one in which there is an abundance of opportunity for good singing.
The Metropolitan Opera House is undoubtedly in a fair way to give the public some good singing during the season which has opened so auspiciously. The company, as displayed thus far, is extremely well supplied with good voices and method. There is a possibility that the histrionic side of operatic art may not be quite so familiar to some of the singers as its vocal side, but a moderate amount of acting combined with good singing will unquestionably meet the demands of the public.
In the comments on the first performance the name of Charlotte Huhn was not mentioned. It should be noted that she gives a careful and vocally correct performance of Asteroth. The correctness of her vocalization in the unaccompanied passage in the second act is worthy of praise. The passage is by no means as easy as it sounds.
The spectacular effects of the opera all moved with smoothness and brilliancy last evening, and the entire performance was enjoyable. The fine tone of the strings in the orchestra was particularly noticeable, and the general work of the instrumental body was admirable.
