Review in The New York Times:
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE
Since the invasion of Italian opera at the Metropolitan the management has been enjoying something like those experiences which Col. Mapleson narrates with such gusto in his memoirs. The difference, however, is that the frequent changes at the Metropolitan Opera House are caused by physical, not financial, sickness. Last evening Meyerbeer's "Prophet" was to have been given, but Herr Perotti's continued indisposition compelled Director Stanton once more to change the programme, and "Fidelio" was given. Under the circumstances Mr. Stanton certainly deserves the kindest consideration. It is early in the season and but few operas have been rehearsed by the company. The field of choice in case of emergency is, therefore, extremely narrow, especially when it is remembered that Herr Alvary is also sick, which precludes the possibility of repeating "Siegfried" or "Lohengrin."
If last night's presentation of Beethoven's opera was not what it should have been, it certainly was impossible to do better with the available singers. Frau Moran-Olden's Leonora is the most interesting impersonation which she has revealed to this public. She acts and sings the part with a great deal of dramatic intensity, and her rendering of the famous "Abscheulicher" was strong and effective last evening. Herr Fischer was again Rocco. Herr Sedlmayer Jacquino, Herr Beck Pizarro, and Fräulein Senger-Bettaque, Marcellina. Herr Moran, husband of Fran Moran-Olden, sang the rôle of Florestan at short notice.
