Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
"L'Africaine" was once more given at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening, and was heard by an audience of good size. "Die Meistersinger" was originally announced, but it had to be postponed on account of the illness of Herr Alvary. The performance did not differ in any material aspect from those heretofore given. Herr Perotti appeared again as the daring navigator, Vasco di Gama, and sang his high notes with his customary vigor. Fräulein Bettaque was the Selika. She is a comely barbarian, and she sang her music with taste. Herr Grinauer, as has been heretofore said, is not a remarkably picturesque or vocal Nelusko. Fräulein Traubmann was tolerable as Inez, and Herr Fischer, though still hoarse, was acceptable as Pedro and the High Priest of Bramah. The spectacular features of the opera were as effective as heretofore, and the procession evoked warm applause. "Faust" will be sung at the matinée today.
