METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE
The substitution of FräuIein Leonora Better for Fräulein Lehmann in yesterday's performance of "The Queen of Sheba," at the Metropolitan Opera House, did not detract from the general interest and brilliancy of the performance. In a more exacting and conspicuous rôle than that of Sulamith Fräulein Lehmann could not easily be replaced; as Assad's affianced she was scarcely missed, although it may be surmised that as a songstress and actress the newcomer is in no respect Fräulein Lehmann's equal. Fräulein Better has an excellent and powerful voice, and she uses it with skill and good taste, if not with the refinement and finish of style for which Fräulein Lehmann's singing claims, as a rule, unqualified commendation. Her acting was scarcely as indicative of experience as her song; the personage, however, is not one that makes great demands upon the feeling, the imagination, or the powers of expression of the artist undertaking its portrayal, and there was no appreciable loss of effect in the love passages with Assad. That character's music was sung, as heretofore, by Herr Alvary, who was in excellent form. Herr Robinson was King, Solomon, Herr Fischer the High Priest, Fräulein Franconi Astaroth, and Frau Herbert-Förster the Queen of Sheba. The splendid scenic attire of the opera was shown once more in all completeness, and the divertissement with which the third act opens called forth loud applause.
