Review 1:
Review in the New York Commercial Advertiser
"Tannhäuser" given for the fourth time last night at the Metropolitan, elicited quite as much enthusiasm as on any former occasion. In substituting Mme. Schroeder-Hanfstaengl as Elizabeth for Mme. Kraus, it could not be said that the opera suffered in any way although, from the brief acquaintance already made with Mme. Schroeder-Hanfstaengt, in a part differing very essentially from this there was at first a suspicion that the substitution might detract somewhat from the completeness with which the opera would be given. In this there was an unexpected and agreeable disappointment. Her ability to meet the exigencies of a dramatic score and to sustain the heaviest of Wagnerian rôles will no longer be doubted. A word of commendation should also be spoken in behalf of Dr. Damrosch's orchestra. Its various parts move not alone in the difficult passages of the overture, but through the later and still more involved ones when the attention of the audience is most likely to be attracted by changing scenes and actions on the stage, with a precision and unity which contribute in the greatest measure to the success of the opera as a whole.
