Yesterday evening Rossini's bright, jolly opera "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," brought the season to a close. "Il Barbiere" ought to have opened the season and then been repeated. As it was, the audience, though only fair in point of size, showed more enthusiasm than all the rest of the week put together.

There is no space to speak in detail of the performance. Signor Stagi was substituted for M. Capoul, who had a sore throat, and, as he could not sing and did not know his part, his presence on the stage was made tolerable only by his fair quality as an actor. The rest of the cast fulfilled every demand. Madame Sembrich won a success which, if it had come in the first part of the week, would have redeemed Mr. Abbey's luck. She sings a high D, E or F with as much ease as ordinary sopranos reach A flat. Her rendering of Proch's "aria and variations" was a magnificent "tour de force," which brought such a round of applause that she was obliged to gratify the audience by singing again. She gave a delightfully quaint Polish aria. Signor Del Puente was inimitable as Figaro and Signor Corsini was also humorous in his part.
