Review in the Herald:
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE
The programme at the opera last night finally announced the withdrawal of "Romeo et Juliet" in consequence of Mme. Sembrich's continued indisposition. The opera substituted was "Don Giovanni," not a happy choice for a makeshift. Under the circumstances it was not surprising that the performance was an extremely perfunctory one, excellent in no particular if Mme. Fursch-Madi's Donna Anna and Herr Kaschmann's Don be left out of consideration.
The illness of Mme. Nilsson as well as Mme. Sembrich made necessary two changes in the cast which presented the opera heretofore. Mme. Lablache essayed the part of Donna Elvira, which is definitely beyond the scope of her ability as a vocalist and Mme. Scalchi impersonated Zerlina. Her performance was much nearer the requirements of the part, and it is easy to imagine that as sterling an artist will never fail utterly in any undertaking, but the comedy rôle which Mme. Sembrich made as bewitching is outside the boundary of her sympathies and her vocal limitations compelled a transposition of the "Batti, batti," which destroyed all its brilliance. On the whole the performance was spiritless and not creditable to the company that has won many encomiums for conscientious interpretation of the masterpiece in spite of discouraging circumstances.
