Review in the Herald:
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE
The glory of Mr. Abbey's season of Italian opera seems to be passing away in a cloud of disappointment. The last week opened inauspiciously on Monday with the change of opera caused by the illness of Mme. Nilsson, Last night Gounod's "Romeo et Juliet" was announced and was thoroughly rehearsed on Tuesday. At noon yesterday Mr. Abbey was informed that Mme. Sembrich, who was to impersonate the part of Juliet, was too ill to sing. Notices were sent in the evening newspapers that "Il Trovatore" would be substituted and "Romeo et Juliet" given last night. The disappointment was a grievous one, and hundreds of people exchanged their tickets. Mme. Sembrich kept her room at the Victoria Hotel and sent word to a number of callers that she was very hoarse and would not sing. Mr. Abbey was not present at the Opera House. There were rumors of trouble between Mme. Sembrich and Signor Vianesei, because of the rehearsal of Tuesday, but they were denied by Herr Stengel, the husband of Mme. Sembrich, who stated that his wife had been troubled with a cold on last Friday, and had only consented to sing on Monday at the strong solicitation of Mr. Abbey. She was, he said, wearied with much singing and unable to do the work which "Romeo et Juliet" exerted.
"Il Trovatore" was given with splendid spirit, Mme. Fursch-Madi taking the part of Leonora, Mme. Lablache that of Azucena, Signor Stagno, who sang in better voice than in the fall season, that of Manrico, and Herr Kaschmann that of the Count.
