ITALIAN OPERA AT THE NATIONAL THEATER. - The production of the Gounod opera of "Faust" last night by the Abbey Opera Company was a complete success. The audience was a very large, stylish and appreciative one, and received the favorite passages of the opera with hearty applause. Mme. Nilsson appeared, as Marguerite, a role which seems peculiarly adapted to her, and in which she has made some of her greatest triumphs. To those who heard her sing in the same role ten years ago she seemed to have wholly retained the purity and power of her glorious voice. Her Marguerite last night was complete, both vocally and dramatically. While Campanini's Faust was rendered with spirit and effect, his admirers were loath to acknowledge that his voice had lost some of its pristine purity. His singing was rough and his high notes were not as pure and thrilling as they once were. Mme. Scalchi increased her popularity with Washington music lovers. Her appearance last night was greeted with applause which was repeated when her resonant and powerful contralto voice filled the theater with its thrilling notes. Signor Novara sang and acted the part of Mephistopheles with great success, while Signor Del Puente, as Valentino, left nothing to be desired. Tonight "Lucia di Lammermoor" will be produced, with Signors Stagno (his first appearance here), Augier, Fornaris, Grazzi and Signor Kaschmann (his first appearance here), Mme. Forti and Mme. Marcella Sembrich (her first appearance in Washington) in the cast. Tomorrow evening: "La Gioconda."
