METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE

The concert at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening, in spite of the attractive array of singers, was not attended by a very large audience. The orchestra chairs were nearly all filled, but there were unsightly gaps in the rows of boxes. Nor was the audience disposed to be over-enthusiastic. Mme. Scalchi and Mme. Trebelli came in for a generous share of such applause as there was. The former sang "No, no" from "Gil Ugonotti," in superb style. Her fine phrasing and excellent facility in runs were well displayed. She was compelled to sing again, when she gave a most charming rendering of the "Voi che sapete," from "Le Nozze di Figaro." Mme. Trebelli treated the audience to a taste of her Carmen by singing the characteristic canzone, "Habanera" in thoroughly artistic style, which won her a hearty encore. Signor Stagno sang a romanza from "Gli Ugonotti" and "La donna e mobile." Signor Del Puente sang the "Largo al factotum" in a dashing, spirited style. Mlle. Louise Lablache gave a good rendering of "Una voce poco fa" from the "Barber," and M. Capoul's catching head notes were neatly used in a pretty air by Frank Howard. Signor Cavazza played a cornet solo. Mlle. Corani, and Signor Stagi sang solos, and the prayer from "Moses in Egypt" was effectively given by a number of the company. The orchestra, under Signor Vianesi played the overture to Auber's "La Muette de Portici," and an entr'acte from Massenet's "Don Cesar de Bazan" in good style.
